Fake Smiles, why I think they are OK and ways to work around them

The FAKE smile.  Many little ones hit this stage.  For some it lasts a few weeks, others months and some never outgrow it.  They overthink it, or they are trying to replicate what you are doing and they think they are nailing it.  SO, rather than make them self conscious, we work around it.  Introduce thoughts that make them happy rather than ask them to be spontaneously happy.
